An excerpt from John F. Kennedys' Proclamation 3466, Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day April 10, 1962.
Now, Therefore, I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, do hereby call upon the people f the United States, and upon all patriotic, civic, and educational organizations to observe the week of May 13-19, 1962, as Police Week with appropriate ceremonies in which all of our people may join in commemorating police officers, past and present, who by their faithful and loyal devotion to their communities and, in so doing, have established/or themselves an enviable and enduring reputation/or preserving the rights and security of all citizens.
I further call upon the people of the United States to observe Monday, May 14, 1962, as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of those peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, have lost their lives or have become disabled in the performance of duty.
As with all designated days of remembrance our thoughts are focused on those who have laid down their lives for others. The Milford Police Department belongs to that very group of police organizations that have lost officers in the line of duty. Officer Harry W. Butler, EOW September 8th, 1916 (Cause of Death -Gunfire) and Sgt. Walter "Moose" Conley, EOW December 10th, 1980 (Cause of Death - Gunfire).
Such acts of heroism can never be understood by those who have never served anyone but themselves. President John F. Kennedy also gave his life in the service of others, a great American who knew the value and importance of public service to ensure freedom.
Please remember all those who serve, past and present.
Chief of Police Robert L. Tusino
